Our family has walked down a road that we hope no other family will experience. But right now, there are others. There will be others. Brain tumour causes are unknown. There is little research that can explain what drives their growth and there is no effective therapy. Brain tumours are the leading cause of cancer death for children under 20 and the only paediatric research centre in Canada is at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.
Jessica's tumour was donated to this research centre team, led by Jessica's doctor, Peter Dirks. Recently, they identified a potential cancer stem cell for brain tumours. There is hope that this discovery will have an enormous influence on how brain tumours are treated in the future and lead to new ways of thinking about cancer. Drug testing is currently underway. |
